They Won't Accept “Old” Dollars: How Ukrainians Are Being Scammed at Currency Exchange Offices and What to Do
Currency Exchange Rules Explained by Attorney Anastasiia Kapustynska
Problems with exchanging “old” foreign banknotes in Ukraine became widespread back in 2023. However, there are no legal grounds for refusing to accept such banknotes or exchanging them at a lower rate solely because of their year of issue.
Banks and currency exchange offices are not entitled to independently impose restrictions based on the year in which foreign banknotes were issued. In the event of violations, customers may file a complaint with the National Bank of Ukraine.
Anastasiia Kapustynska, Attorney at ETERNIX Law Firm, explained the applicable currency exchange rules and the legal options available to customers in her commentary for Telegraf.
